What is vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based rehabilitation program, designed by a trained vestibular physical therapist, to improve balance and reduce problems related to dizziness. Vestibular rehabilitation is a field that has grown substantially in recent years, and has become a major component in the management of patients with dizziness/disequilibrium/vertigo, etc. An assessment will determine if you are a candidate for a vestibular rehab program, and if so, an individualized treatment plan can begin immediately.

Signs and symptoms of vestibular disorders primarily include:

• dizziness
• vertigo (a sense of spinning)
• imbalance/ataxia
• nystagmus
• poor gaze stability

There are different types of vestibular disorders, with variable patient presentation. Symptoms may be the result of BPPV, a unilateral vestibular lesion, bilateral vestibular lesion, or other medical condition. An assessment will determine whether your symptoms can be managed with vestibular rehabilitation.
